I paint the effects of racism in America and how Americans reiterate those beliefs through their actions as civilians and through the government's laws. My work is driven by both American history and personal experiences and utilizes deep symbolism that addresses western identity, politics, discrimination, and Mexican-American culture within the American system. I paint with the intent to pull the viewer into my work with its texture-filled spaces and bright color use to illustrate the erasure of Mexican-American history and the bigotry at the hands of the American government.
By utilizing a surrealist style to illustrate events of American history, a serious tone is washed over by bright imagery of traumatic events that have altered generations of people and their history. I use acrylic and oil to create vivid color, texture, and dimension throughout the pieces. By making use of these elements, I bring people in and draw their attention to subjects that Americans tend to ignore due to their historical biases.
